Exposed Aggregate
Concrete that reveals the aggregate that is embedded in the surface. A surface retarder is sprayed on the concrete immediately after it is finished which breaks up the top layer of “cream,” or Portland cement. After the concrete has cured for a day or two a pressure washer is used over the entire surface to remove the top layer of Portland cement that has been weakened by the surface retarder. Pea gravel is a common aggregate that is used in exposed aggregate finishes.
