Sandblasting

Sand particles that are shot out of a gun or machine at high pressure to give concrete a certain profile or engrave a decorative design.

Saturated Surface Dry (SSD)

Condition of concrete when the permeable voids are filled
with water but no water is on the exposed surface.

Sawcutting

One method used to create a control joint. A specialized saw is used to cut lines, typically ¼” wide by 1” deep, into a surface to control cracking. Sawcuts can also be used to incorporate a decorative look into concrete

Scaling

The flaking away of the top of a concrete surface usually due to freeze thaw

Scarifier

A tool used create a profile on the surface of a concrete substrate. Blades strike the concrete at an angle eating away at the top layer of concrete.
