Create Your Own Finishing Tool for Pool & Step Edges

After removing foam edge forms, there will be bug holes and roughness which will need to be smoothed and finished once the forms have been removed from the face of the concrete. In an earlier article we discussed how to create the slurry for the pool and step edges. Now we will discuss how to apply that slurry efficiently. A putty knife or margin trowel is great for getting the slurry mix onto the edges but inadequate for smoothing and finishing. Having a tool that matches the edge profile will allow you to create a properly finished surface.

To create your profile tool you will need a piece of the styrofoam form that matches the profile you used when casting the concrete, a hand saw, and 4" vinyl tape. Using the hand saw cut a 3-1/2" wide piece off the form. Then cut horizontally through that piece of the form at the base of the profile (this is the part that will match your concrete edge profile). You can just throw the bottom portion out. Blow away any loose pieces and particles of foam.

With your clean and cut piece of form you will use the vinyl tape to cover the tool to ensure a nice, smooth working tool. The extra 1/4" you figured into the tool now will be evenly distributed on each side of the tool. Attach the vinyl tape to the top of the tool then flip upside down. Flipping it upside down will allow you to place the tape on the form easier and make sure it is on there smooth. Slowly move down the tool and then cut off the roll of tape.

It is really important to make sure the tool is free of any debris or loose pieces. If you happen to get anything caught underneath the tape then it could cause a flaw in the finishing process, such as a streak in the edge. Vinyl tape has proven to be best to use as it is very durable and of thicker consistency. Other tape options are not as durable, tear easily, and will not last through the whole project.

Take your new profile tool and start finishing those edges! Missed the post about making a slurry mix? View the post here, https://www.deco-cretesupply.com/news/fix-bug-holes-vertical-faces
