Fix Bug Holes in Vertical Faces

You placed your concrete using integral concrete colorant and now you have vertical faces with bug holes. How can you get them filled and have the color match? We have the solution for you to patch bug holes left behind from step liners or Styrofoam forms and have them match perfectly.

First you will need an empty 5-gallon bucket and a drill with a 1/4" bit. You will need to drill about 50-60 holes into the bottom of the bucket and about a quarter of the way up the sides. Then remove some of the extra concrete from the pour so it can be used to create the slurry mix. Fill the bucket with the extra concrete above the holes you drilled in the bucket.

Before you make your slurry, place a clean piece of plastic underneath the bucket so you have something to hold the colored slurry. Using a concrete vibrator, you will vibrate the material in the bucket so the slurry will push through the holes onto the clean piece of plastic. The plastic will allow you to wrap up the slurry and keep it fresh for when it is time to use it. Place the wrapped slurry in the shade, cooler, or fridge to extend the usable life.

When you are ready to apply the slurry, you will place a small amount into a mixing container. Using a margin trowel, you will trowel the slurry into the larger bug holes of the step face or pool coping. A custom-made tool, or piece of the form, will be required to spread out the slurry and conform to the face profile. On rough textured surfaces, such as chiseled stone, paint brushes will be needed to apply the slurry. We will discuss making a tool out of a profiled edge form in a future post.
